Wandering Hearts (Gypsy and Tribe)

Post by Vineda »

Ruby violet hues greeted the dawn as an old friend, and Gypsy's thoughts surfaced briefly from their daze. He picked his way along a rocky shore after leaving his desert and wandering through forest and field. Long journeys were no stranger to this lad, though this one seemed to stretch on longer than most. Fields held rivers, which had to go somewhere. Following their meanderings, past thickets and then through protected vales to finally reach the sea in its glory.

Standing atop the tallest rocks gave a view of the corals out beyond shoals of shallow-dwelling fish. Breezes brought scents of brine and baking driftwood. His mane tufted too close to his body to be much affected by the breeze, but his tail flowed out behind him like a banner. Ribbons snapped and bells tinkled gently, the music of his march. He thought perhaps the turn of the tides would bring him peace. The sounds were lovely, certainly. The reflection of the rising sun's light rippling across the waves. Somehow he still found himself wondering where to wander next.

It felt as though he were seeking a great treasure, only to arrive at his destination and learn that he had many more stops to make along the way. With no map. And no mission. But onward he must go, for around the next bend might be just what he was looking for. A deep sigh, from the depths of his being. There was once a day when his heart would have filled to brimming simply at the new sights and sounds and smells. How many thousands of thousands of steps had he traveled in his wanderings? Where had the excitement of it gone? Across the rocks he journeyed onward, for all he knew was to keep moving on until he learned what it was he searched for.

It was touch that she missed the most.

She wandered; she couldn't help it. The sea took her where it would, sang in her blood, threw her along vast shorelines she could never have imagined. Such treasures she found! She followed the seasons, the tides, the sun; she found that which was new and made it familiar.

But she did it alone. She had tried, of course. She had tried and tried to find someone that could fill the shadow that lingered at her side, to find her people, her own tribe. It was marvelous, but it was so lonely. And yet the restlessness of remaining at home only seemed to make the lack of such soothing companionship all the worse.

But then, there were times where she could forget. Times where she lost herself in the feel of a new sun, the scent of a new sky, the taste of a new sea. It always started with the seas, but it rarely ever ended there. Last moon she had found a dead volcano. Who knew volcanos could die? But the fire in this beast's belly had long since been pacified, creating fascinating caverns through a hollow mountain.

How had she gotten to a volcano in the middle of a forest, again? Oh, that's right. The beach lead to rivers that cut through the swamps that rose into plains that slowly became lush, until suddenly she was in a forest with a hollow volcano waiting to be explored. Good hiding spot for a few treasures; several polished stones she knew would be useful later. There was always someone who appreciated something shiny. And this time nothing had tried to eat, burn, rend, or otherwise maul her. Not every new species greeted her with anything even close to kindness.

And here she was, along another beach, this one perhaps not quite so strange. Re-telling her own tales to herself, because there was nobody else to listen to her. Something familiar, something in Sionayra, but still something that wasn't home. She couldn't be home, right now. She would return, when that need for touch became desperate, but there were none there who could touch her the way she craved. A friendly, welcoming nuzzle didn't provide her with that sense of connection - and although she loved them, she hadn't found the one that would be part of her wandering band of gypsies, not there.

At least she was beginning her latest wandering in style; floating to shore on a bit of driftwood. Had to be careful on a beach like this; didn't want a stone in the hoof. Maybe she could... Yes, that might work.

Grinning, she shifted her weight on the wood that held her aloft, tilting and leaning until she was coasting along the edge of the water, whooping out a laugh whenever the bottom of the wood bumped along the shallow beach line. They would never believe her when she said she rode a bit of wood over the sand!

This is what sang in her blood.

The search tugged at him, teasing, leading forward over the treacherous rocks. Pebbles scattered down the slight incline below him. He tried to be a quiet passerby but the land simply would not cooperate. One moment he was upright and balanced, and the next the uneven surface beneath him gave way enough to throw his from half forward. It all happened fast enough that flailing to recover balance was not an option. Knees slammed forward to meet unforgiving ground before him.

At least he was able to lean weight toward higher ground rather than falling down the dip in a somersaulting heap. Gypsy lay with front hooves tucked beneath him, strong back legs bracing him from sliding downward. Taking stock he felt a few spots burn a bit. Minor scrapes. He was lucky then. His own fault, he knew, for not keeping his mind on the task at hand.

After a moment's preparation a grunting 'hya' sounded as the large stallion regained his feet and shook himself slightly. Perhaps descending to the flat stretch closer to the water would be a better idea.

He managed to arrive on even (if still rocky) ground in one piece, but a sigh escaped him as he noticed a lazy trickle of blood against a golden hoof. Best soak it in some saltwater and see if that did the trick. Probably nothing. Cool waves lapped eagerly up to his feet, and Gypsy had to admit as he waded to his knees that it was soothing once the brief sting resolved.

Relaxing finally, eyes trained to search wandered to the horizon to fall upon a figure. His tumble may have been harsher than he thought. It looked like she stood tall upon some dark sea creature as she neared the shore. Surely though a creature that big wouldn't do so well in the shallows? He'd seen ships and rowboats before, but they always had sides or sails... Poor Gypsy closed his eyes and shook his head to clear away the fuddle.

Well, and who could blame her for being distracted with a sight such as he standing in the shallows?

He didn't have much in the way of trinkets, but in her own humble opinion this one didn't much need them. He was a walking sunset, the skyline she always turned towards, with a back broad enough to bear the weight of the world. She lost her focus just for an instant and that was all that was needed; the driftwood bumped again, and this time it sent her tumbling through the water with a surprised Yeep!

Tribe landed hard and when she finally tumbled to a stop on her stomach, coughed up about a lungful of seawater. She started laughing as soon as she could get a proper breath, and for all that the breath was a bit wheezy at first it was still a full and proper laugh.

This they'd have no problem believing, at all. The thought made her laugh harder. She should introduce herself, she knew, but at this point her name may as well be Giggles - which only set her off again!

If- I-If you could- giggle Ex-kooz- giggle Excuse my g-grand entrance, I w-would be most pleased to make your acquaintance.

She finally got something out, at least, although she realized a bit belatedly that she was still sprawled on her stomach. She couldn't help it; the little sea mare looked about herself as if surprised to see the ocean there, and set off once more in a fit of giggles.

This was why she couldn't, wouldn't, change who she was.

Golden eyes opened again to study the mare approaching the shore. Clearly, she was regarding him as well. As she neared and his attention turned to her frame rather than her ride, those eyes widened. They drank in details hurriedly, noting the flash of a gilded hoof here and the pearly lines where slender legs joined body. Those gentle hues of lavender against the bright blues of mane and tail. Flowing strands of purple hid in her tresses like an exotic sea plant tendril. And her own jewelry complimented her exquisitely.

Those eyes though. They were expressive, and he was taken aback by their depths. The moment their eyes locked was somehow intense as he realized that the mare from his dreams had appeared here before him. He'd long heard tales of her from his bond herd mates, and long wished to meet her. He had no time to dwell on it for she took her own tumble.

Gypsy scrambled forward, arriving at her side as the most interesting gasping sounds began. It took a moment to realize the coughs were interspersed with laughter. He didn't quite know how best to help. Her giggles were contagious, and he found himself chuckling deeply despite his worry. Grand entrance, indeed! That was one to leave for discussion a bit later.

Are you alright there, love? Are you hurt? How can I help? He sounded like Sham, but she was so endearing and had earned herself gentle tokens before they were even properly introduced.

He was sweet, to ask after her. Much more likely to laugh at such a display, and although he did join her with a chuckle he still asked if he might help.

She may well need help if she couldn't get her legs back under her, but then it may be that she simply sought an excuse to lean against him, to feel the warmth of his skin. She wasn't a mare given to disceptions, not even from herself, and found that she had to admit that it was perhaps evenly split.

At least the insight was enough to let her get control of all the laughter. Sometimes a good, hard laugh was exactly what was needed to help cleanse the spirit, and she felt that perhaps hers had been a touch overdue for such release. She wouldn't feel poorly for it, even if it had been a rather odd introduction thus far; besides, he certainly hadn't seemed to mind. Just as well, as any who could be sour over laughter was none she would want for company, however brief.

Aren't you sweeter than honeysuckle?, she said, and turned a genuine smile up to his face, thanking him in a look for sharing such a silly moment with her. This really would be a great story to bring home. I could use a touch of help up, perhaps. The shoreline is worse than the beach, it looks like, but I'd just as soon not step on anything a bit more crawly, ya see?

She smiled again, half remembering how she'd learned that particular lesson - she still visited that poor urchin, seeing bout how it was healing up after having encountered her - and cautiously shifted her weight about. Small and cautious though the movements were, she still felt a scrape rip up her foreleg as she tried to gather herself, preparing for the lurch that would bring her upright. What was that, then, to scratch at her so?

Tribe paused, heeding the demands of her curiosity, and promptly rolled her eyes in a mock dramatic fashion as she saw a piece of her wooden ferrier had broken off with her tumble. She hadn't landed on it, but it had gotten wedged in the sand just enough to announce its presence to her poor leg. Silly old thing, she murmured, tugging it free and setting it adrift in the shallow water, I must be growing careless, not to have thought of such.

She hadn't even quite realized she'd said as much aloud. Speaking to the shadow of a companion she'd not found had become such long habit that by this point, it was wholly automatic.

Another shift, a quick heave, and - and she found herself hoping quite sharply that he might grant her that assistance as her back hoof slipped out from under her and she began to lurch. Oh, dear. This is how one went about breaking a leg, especially as she felt her hoof slip a bit sideways. She'd gotten to her feet a million times in water before, but this was the once where the bit of seaweed that had been attached to the very driftwood she'd fractured in her tumble caught beneath her leg. She hadn't felt it underneath her stomach, but she certainly felt it tangle and slip in her hoof.
