Pierre gave a long chuckle. "Sure, lets explore the lake. Even in the place I came from, important things are found in unlikely places. It would be foolish to overlook something as seemingly useless as a weed, for if used correctly that weed could be a great medicine."

He rolled up the map, and stashed it in his pack. He pulled something out of his pack and ate it.

"Do you object to a little hunting while we explore? I've naught left except for some dried fruit."

She flashed a grin at the concept of a hunt, clearly pleased with the notion.

We may even catch something worthwhile, if we work together, she purred. Until we find something good, though, tell me; what's it like where you're from? What's it called?

Pierre's face grew a bit somber. "At the time I left, at least a three way war had broken out. One lord of a country to the south had been gathering forces and endowments, almost enough to rule the entire world. A week before I disappeared, the two kings of the two most powerful countries in the northern alliance had been killed. One of them in battle, the other in cold blood. The one killed in cold blood had been my king."

He paused a minute, as the details washed over him.

"A few nations in the northern alliance are suspected of having betrayed us, though nothing was certain when I disappeared. The third force in this three way battle were the Reavers. I can't think of a good way to describe a Reaver. The best I can come up with is to try to imagine a giant armored ant. An ant that is about twice as tall as you are, and has armor so strong, that you'd break teeth on it before it cracked in your jaw. They are very strong, fast, and intelligent. Only the most endowed knights can take them down.

There had been stories of the Reavers attacking towns in the night, killing most if not all, but carrying some of the people off alive. It chills my blood just to think about it.
"

He stopped talking and seemed to get lost in thought.

They shared the silence for a while, each lost in their own thoughts. For a moment she considered commenting. Being a liger, she decided not to. It was more natural to hold her silence for the moment.

I smell prey, she said, stopping in her tracks. Swine. Half a scent mark from where the sun sleeps.

Lifting her head, she took a deep breath and tasted the scent on her tongue, yawning her mouth wide. Two and a half miles south west was a large sow. They tasted better than the battling males.

We can head that way and slowly flank her, drawing a bit further apart with each step, she suggested. She had to stop herself from simply heading out, pausing with something simular to surprise as she remembered the need to confer.

Assuming he was agreed - since it was a good plan - she started off again. After a moment she said War is stupid. I don't think I'll ever understand it. Some of my kind coild, though. They went insane and were cast out - abandoned, instead of mercifully killed. So they killed us, instead. She paused a moment, a look of great pain twisting her face into a mask of rage as she said Our home was destroyed. Everything - an entire realm, lost. The insane ones, the ones that evolved into a new species, they could understand war.

After a moment she added Sometimes I think every two-legs must be born insane, to know such things.

Then she was disappearing into the shadows, preparing for the pig to be driven straight to her waiting jaws.

Pierre didn't say a word to her response, he only nodded, while he drew a hunting knife from his pack.

He then shouldered his pack, and headed off with Songhue. Before they parted ways to trap the sow, he had one thing to say. "I don't believe that everyone of us is born insane, but I do believe that insanity can take over if it is allowed."

He watched carefully where she disappeared to. A couple minutes later, he had located the sow, and roughly positioned himself so that the sow was between him and Songhue. Making a sudden noise, he got the sow to start running toward Songhue. "Too far to the right," he thought. He threw his knife past the pig into a tree on its right side. The thwack echoed and started the pig enough that it angled to the left, just enough to be headed straight for Songhue.

Pierre let the pig get farther ahead of him, while he recovered his knife. He was glad to see that while the pig was still running, it was slowing down. He started running after it again, figuring it should be caught any second now.

She blended in with spotted shadows under the tree, her pale base mingling with the dust. It wasn't perfect camouflage, but it was adequate enough for a panicked pig - as long as she didn't move.

She almost blew it. Her muscles tensed and she prepared to charge out as the sow began to veer off. She had only just lifted her tail to prepare to spring, measuring the distance she'd have to leap when the knife twanged.

It was only through keeping her eyes on the prey that she didn't wind up with a hoof in her nose. Minutes later there was fresh meat to be had, but her focus was on the man walking towards her rather than the meal at her paws.

She'd underestimated him. He could, apparently, be counted on to do his part. With a flick of her tail she opened up the meal and tore herself off enough to satisfy her; then settled near by and continued to watch him while she ate. If he was self-reliant as well he wouldn't need help with a fire.

If she started to like him enough, she'd stick around to help him figure out his journey.
